GM vice chairman Bob Lutz told the crowd the concept ?captures elements of the original Camaro, yet interprets everything in a bold, contemporary way.? Lutz said the silver concept is ?reminiscent of a ?60s Camaro, but will run with the best sports cars today.?
Under the long hood is a 6.0-litre, 400-hp small block V8 borrowed from a Corvette. The all-aluminum engine is mated to a six-speed manual transmission.
Although Lutz says that ?right now, it?s purely a concept,? you have to figure Chevrolet wouldn?t go to all this trouble unless it wanted to generate some serious buzz about a car it already has decided to build.
Ford unveiled production versions on Sunday of its new Shelby Mustang convertible and coupe, and Dodge took the wraps off a Challenger concept that?s reminiscent of 1970 and which looks like it easily could be turned into a production model.
When Ford launched the Mustang back in 1964, it prompted the other U.S. automakers to come up with their own ?pony cars? - Camaros, Firebirds, Challengers, Javelins and the like.
Looks like round two of the pony car wars is about to begin.

stellt sich bloß die frage ob man sich diesmal ein paar seltene modelle gleich in die garage stellen soll um sie in 30-40 jahren dann als perfekte survivor zu verkaufen.... könnt a super pensions-vorsorge sein.

Meanwhile, Pontiac General manager Lynn Myers and GM's new product chairman Bob Lutz seemed to remove all doubt about a Firebird in the future by stating that Pontiac was moving up market as a sort of American version of BMW. This means performance across the board, but also meant a more upscale crowd. Something not exactly represented by the Pontiac Firebird. Even Pontiac's youth-oriented "pass it on" ad campaign was viewed as the wrong direction, and ended up becoming short-lived. Mr. Lutz said the ads sent the wrong message about the division, that it is too down-market and not exciting and aspirational enough. "It didn't show the kinds of people we wanted the brand to be associated with," Lutz said. Even more recently in a conversation reported by Ward's Auto World, Lutz acknowledged the end of the Firebird by stating, "Firebird's day is gone."
Ich sag euch, in spätestens einem Jahr werden wir das Firebird Konzept sehen
