Firebirds and Mustangs in Austria?

Beitragvon SLP » Mittwoch 21. Oktober 2015, 19:57

Hallo!

Also, was tun image US Autos haben in Österreich, speziell Firebirds und Mustangs?

Vielen Dank im Voraus für Ihre Eingabe wieder sorry für mein Deutsch. Ich werde auch die gleiche Botschaft in Englisch, falls es hilft. Vielen Dank!

English version:

Hello!

I would like to start by first apologizing for my German. My mother language is English. So I'm writing with the help of Mister Google. :)

I would like to ask if owning U.S. cars such as a Firebird or Mustang as a daily driver in Austria is feasible?

Is maintenance difficult or expensive for these cars in Austria?

Also, is there any stigma against U.S. cars in Austria?

For example, I was surprised to be told by somebody I know in Austria that one of my favorite European cars, the 1988 Mercedes AMG is a Zuhälterauto. I showed him a picture of the car and he said: "This is a Zuhälterauto!"

So what image do U.S. cars have in Austria, specially Firebirds and Mustangs?

Thanks in advance for your input and again sorry for my German. I will also include the same message in English in case it helps. Thanks!

If the benz is a "zuhälterauto" then the firebird is a "schlampenschleuder" and the mustang is a "stricherkutsche".

Fuck off what people say, and drive what you want.

Thanks for replying.

Are you saying that the cars have such an image in Austria or are you being sarcastic?

Thanks.

in Austria all cars have a "Special Image" - regardless of whether japanese, european or american types.
you will see all types of american cars on austrian streets, especially in the summertime, rarely as a daily Driver.

(sorry for my poor english...)

100% Agree

I think there are multiple Opinions: The group of People like us US-CarFans who like them, the Group of People who would like to own one but can't afford it, eventually called "Neider" & the "Ökos" with the general opinion that US-Cars are terrible Gas Guzzlers which are bad for the Environment...

On the other side, driving a boring Golf TDI in Austria is fully accepted by the community. At the moment we pay about 5.22$ /Gallon for Fuel and for a Car with 250hp 791.37$ in Taxes without Insurance for a half year......

Your English is fine. :)
Much better than my German.

So what image does the Firebird and Mustang have? Not that it will influence me. I would just like to know with which eyes people will be looking at me.

But I have to agree that in Austria all cars seem to have a "Special Image". I hear people calling cars "Poli" or something like that too. I think this is the equivalent of the English "Ricers" or the Fast and Furious type of cars.

But I would have never thought an AMG to be looked down at. It's an special and expensive car.

I will make sure to find the newbie thread you mentioned. Thanks.

So you pay 791.37 for 6 months and this is not even insurance? So what taxes are these? Thanks.

It'called "Motorsteuer" and is calculated from the KW of the Engine... If you Import a Car or Buy a New one there is a Tax called "Nova", which can make US Cars (exept Trucks) extremely Expensive to Buy in Austria.

Here's a link for Calculation of the "Motorsteuer": https://durchblicker.at/autoversicherun ... er-rechner

I see. So you must pay this for every car?

By the way, I would not be importing or buying new. I would buy an used one already in Austria.

Thanks.

Edit: I see there are different prices for new and old. What is considered old?

And is this plus insurance all you need to pay to have the car in Austria?

I'm wondering how much for insurance.

You can drive a Mustang, Firebird or other Zuhältercar...its almost ready. But ...if you drive a Diesel Volkswagen...you soon will be hanging on the next tree.

In general I think the Mustang is the most common known US-Car in Austria. If you ask "normal" People if they know a Car from the U.S. you will mostly get as Answer: Ford Mustang

I see. So you must pay this for every car?

By the way, I would not be importing or buying new. I would buy an used one already in Austria.

Yes, we pay "Motorsteuer" for every Car depending on Horsepower but we can have up to 3 Cars registered to one Set of License Plates. Then only the Car with the most Horsepower counts for the Tax. The Insurance is hard to Answer because it is calculated individually and it is paid per Car.

Once a Year we must take our Car(s) to the "Pickerl", which consists of a Emissionstest and a check to determine if the car is "roadworthy". This Test costs about 50$ per Car/Year.

We also cannot simply modifiy our Cars, changes like lowering the suspension or bigger Wheels must be Inspected by the State and "Typisiert". Driving without inspected changes can result in big trouble with our Cops...

Upto say about 20-25 Years Cars are just old, 20-25 up to 30 Years is called "Youngtimer" and 30 Years and up is called "Oldtimer", but a 3rd or 4th Gen. Firebird shouldnt be very expensive to Buy. But If you cant fix your Car yourself you need a good or US-Car specialized Mechanic. Parts for our Cars are either direct imported from the U.S. or we buy them at the Us-Car Part Dealer.
